Choosing a Home Care Agency: What to Look For

With hundreds of home care agencies to choose from, how do you find the right one? This checklist covers the key things to look for — from CQC ratings to carer matching and continuity of care.

Check the CQC Rating

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects and rates every home care agency in England. Their reports are free to read online and cover five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. An agency rated Good or Outstanding across these areas has demonstrated that it meets high standards of care.

Don't just look at the overall rating — read the full report. It will tell you about specific strengths, areas for improvement, and what the inspectors observed during their visit. Pay particular attention to the 'Caring' and 'Safe' sections, as these most directly affect the day-to-day experience of care.

Ask About Carer Matching and Continuity

One of the biggest factors in quality home care is the relationship between the carer and the person receiving care. Ask the agency how they match carers to clients — do they consider personality and interests as well as skills and experience?

Continuity of care is equally important. Being visited by a different carer every day is unsettling and makes it harder to build trust. A good agency will aim to send the same carer (or a small, consistent team) for every visit, so the person receiving care sees familiar faces.

Understand the Care Planning Process

Every person's care needs are different, so a one-size-fits-all approach is a red flag. Ask how the agency creates care plans — do they carry out a detailed home assessment? Is the care plan written down and shared with the family? How often is it reviewed?

A good care plan should cover not just clinical and personal care needs, but also the person's preferences, routines, likes and dislikes. It should be a living document that's updated as needs change, not a form that's filled in once and forgotten.

Check Training and Qualifications

All home carers should have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check before they start working with clients. Beyond this, ask about the agency's induction programme, mandatory training (moving and handling, medication management, safeguarding, infection control) and opportunities for specialist training such as dementia care.

Agencies that invest in their staff's professional development tend to have lower turnover, more experienced carers and better overall quality of care.

Be Clear on Costs and Contracts

Transparency on pricing is essential. Ask for a written quote that sets out exactly what's included in the hourly or weekly rate. Are there additional charges for bank holidays, evenings or weekends? Is there a minimum visit length? What notice period is required if you want to change or cancel the service?

Be wary of agencies that are vague about costs or reluctant to put things in writing. A trustworthy provider will be upfront about pricing and happy to answer detailed questions.

Questions to Ask Before You Commit

Before choosing an agency, consider asking: What is your CQC rating and when was your last inspection? How do you match carers to clients? What happens if my regular carer is sick or on holiday? How quickly can you start providing care? What is your complaints procedure? Can I speak to other families you support?
